Ukrainian defenders downed three Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers on the southern front on December 22.
Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said this on Telegram.
Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, has noted that the hunt for the Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers, which had been creating problems for the Defence Forces on the southern front, had been going on for a long time.
“We immediately received the report on the destruction of Russian aircraft by Ukrainian air defence forces, and we understand what it is about. Now we can reveal a little secret: the hunt for them had been going on for a long time, because these planes were interfering with and endangering our soldiers, and I sincerely congratulate everyone who took part in this. It was a perfect result”, he added.
The Air Force explained that three Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers were caught during a risky manoeuvre – the Russian aircraft were trying to drop guided bombs deeper behind the contact line.
“Lightning fast and with high precision. Just the way the Air Force commander prefers. This is not the first time. It happened twice on the Bryansk front and in Odesa Oblast, when the enemy was caught by surprise.
The occupiers are already confirming it in their channels, wishing the Russian pilots an eternal flight. They say that they even managed to save someone from the scene”, Colonel Yurii Ihnat, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman said.
“Well, actually. They got cocky, came closer, tried to strike our troops with guided bombs deeper in the defence positions. You know that 500kg guided air-to-surface bombs can fly 20-25 kilometres into the depths of our defences. But when you want to strike and are itching to strike, you have to fly closer. They took a risk – unsuccessfully. Hopefully, the Russians will take more such risks, and we will see more downed Russian Su fighter-bombers”, he added.
Colonel Yurii Ihnat, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman also pointed out that similar incidents of shooting down enemy aircraft had occurred near Zmiinyi Island and over the Russian Bryansk region before. According to him, the adversary once again showed audacity, as the Bryansk history, the Odessa stories, where both Su-24 and Su-35 were intercepted, apparently taught them nothing.
“At the beginning of the Russian aggression, Ukrainian Forces destroyed immediately three ‘fat’ targets when the enemy behaved arrogantly, flying practically over Ukrainian cities,” he explained.
The downing of three Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers by the Ukrainian Defense Forces has caused significant concern in the aggressor country. The loss of these aircraft has raised worries in Russia about the potential strengthening of Ukrainian air defense capabilities in the southern direction, report analysts at the Institute for the Study of War.
The information regarding the downing of three aircraft by Ukrainian military forces in the southern direction has been confirmed by the Russian Air Force.
However, Russian correspondents claim that Ukrainian air defense systems shot down these Su-34s in the Kherson region near Krynky.
“Russian war correspondents have responded to the isolated incident with significant concern regarding the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces in southern Ukraine,” according to the report.
