Ecuador’s ‘most-wanted prisoner’, the leader of the feared Los Choneros criminal group, has disappeared from his prison cell, sparking a countrywide manhunt. Jose Adolfo Macias, known as ‘Fito’, is believed to have escaped his cell in the maximum-security wing of a jail in Guayaquil, a port city known for its involvement in the South American drug trade, some time on Sunday. General Cesar Zapata, the national commander of police, this morning told a press conference the country’s armed forces had determined that one of the inmates in the Guayaquil prison was missing.
