If we summarize all the data on the promised and fulfilled deliveries of Western-style anti-aircraft missile systems to ensure Ukraine’s air defense, we get literally a “zoo” of systems in a rather limited number.
This gives an understanding of the level of dependence of our air defense on American-made anti-aircraft missiles, and how many air defense systems and what types the United States previously promised us, but at the moment they have not delivered, what the new one is about publications of the authoritative IISS (International Institute for Strategic Studies). But on the part of News Hub, we note that apparently this list cannot contain what was transmitted without a public announcement. That is, you should not take this list as exhaustive.
The authors of the IISS summarized all their calculations in the table above, which looks quite illustrative and at the same time somewhat difficult to perceive, since its compilers proceeded from the chronological principle.
To simplify perception, you can try to sort all the data given there by type of anti-aircraft missile systems, and as a result, based on IISS data, the picture will look like this:
- Patriot – a total of 5 full fire units were delivered from the USA, Germany and Romania; in addition, a total of 9 launchers were received from Germany and the Netherlands; 2 more full batteries from the USA promised, but not delivered;
- NASAMS – a total of 3 full batteries from the USA and Canada were supplied; 9 launchers from Norway and one from Lithuania were also delivered; promised, but not yet delivered – as many as 8 full batteries from the USA and 10 starting batteries from Norway;
- MIM-23 – a total of 2 batteries from Spain were delivered;
- SAMP/T – it is alleged that the delivery of two batteries, including one from Italy in 2024, has been completed;
- IRIS–T SLM – a total of 6 full batteries from Germany; another 2 – promised, but not yet delivered;
- IRIS–T SLS (short range) – two complexes from Germany were delivered; promised, but not delivered – six from Germany;
- CrotaleNG – two complexes from France;
- Skygard/Aspide – one air defense system from Spain;
- S-300 – one complex from Slovakia.
In total, according to the calculations of the authors of the IISS, it turns out that during 2022-2024, Ukraine from Western countries has 24 full batteries of air defense systems of various types, of which 10 are American-made; separately – nine launchers to the Patriots and ten launchers to NASAMS.
In turn, of the promised, 18 full batteries of air defense systems of various types and ten launch batteries to NASAMS have not yet been delivered, while 10 (two fire unit Patriot and eight fire unit NASAMS) are in the United States.
Apparently, in this logic of calculations, IISS experts decided not to take into account the supply of complexes for army air defense, otherwise, in this case, the table would take into account, for example, the Kub air defense systems received from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and probably Poland. In addition, there may be situations when one country publicly provided launchers, and the other, without announcing, radars and other components of air defense systems, which allows “assembling” air defense systems, but this is not reflected in the report.
But at the same time, the following point is emphasized – already at the end of 2022, our country was on the verge of exhausting the supply of anti-aircraft missiles for Soviet-style air defense systems, so the supply of air defense systems from Western countries literally saved the situation for warring Ukraine.
