Father Makariy, known as Padre, serves as a chaplain in the 2nd International Legion, providing both spiritual and moral support to soldiers. Born in Brazil within Ukrainian diaspora, his connection to Ukraine runs deep. Raised with strong sense of Ukrainian identity, he later took religious vows that solidified his dedication to God, Ukraine, and its people.
When the war escalated, Padre felt a calling to join the fight, not as a soldier but as a spiritual guide. He offers daily prayers and motivational messages, ensuring that his fellow legionnaires understand the deep historical roots of Ukraine’s struggle against russian oppression.
Beyond his chaplaincy, Padre plays an active role in supporting his comrades. He assists with logistics, translation, and morale-building efforts, particularly for foreign volunteers who arrive unfamiliar with Ukraine’s language and culture. His knowledge and faith unite soldiers of diverse backgrounds in a common cause.
Padre’s work has not gone unnoticed by the enemy. Russian propaganda has attempted to discredit him, labeling him a Nazi in online campaigns. However, such attacks do not deter him.
“My mission is a spiritual mission,” he asserts, unwavering in his belief that the battle is not only for territory but for Ukraine’s very identity.
His commitment extends beyond the war itself. Padre has no plans to return to Brazil once the war ends.
“I love this country as my own,” he says, “I came to serve, and I am ready to give my life for this nation.” His dedication has earned him the respect of both Ukrainian and foreign fighters.
