A doctor in Vinnytsia military unit arrested for accepting bribe
A doctor of one of the military units demanded a bribe of $2,500 for assistance in obtaining a certificate of recognition of a person with limited fitness for military service. Law enforcement officers detained the official while he was receiving illegal benefits.
As reported in the communication department of the Vinnytsia Oblast police, investigators of the investigative department together with operatives of the strategic investigations department with the assistance of the military counter-intelligence department of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed the scheme of illegal activity.
The official demanded money from a soldier who was undergoing a military medical examination in connection with an illness, for issuing the latter a decision recognizing him as limited fit for military service. In case of refusal, the doctor of the hospital threatened to apply for recognition of the person as fully fit.
While receiving a bribe of 2,500 dollars, the suspect was detained.
During the searches, the police seized almost 15,000 dollars and over 100,000 hryvnias, mobile phones, bank cards, flash drives, seals, stamps, documentation, drafts and other material evidence of criminal activity.
On January 12, under the procedural leadership of the Vinnytsia specialized prosecutor’s office in the field of defense of the Southern region, investigators informed the detainee of suspicion under part 3 of Art. 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Abuse of influence). The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of deprivation of liberty for a term of up to eight years with confiscation of property.
The court chose a preventive measure for the suspect – 24-hour house arrest.
It will be recalled that in October 2023, in Vinnytsia, the Khmilnytskyi City District Court announced the sentence to a neurologist from the local VLK, who for $300 agreed to recognize her husband as limited fit for military service.
According to the case file, the doctor agreed to take a bribe from her husband. For “thanks”, she promised to confirm the conscript’s diagnosis of “Syringomyelia” and to recognize him as limited fit for service in the ranks of the Armed Forces. Later, the woman was detained. At the court hearing, she said that through acquaintances, she learned about the conscript, who needs to confirm the diagnosis. She asked for $300 for her services, but she allegedly got scared later and refused the bribe. She pleaded guilty and made a deal with the investigation.
She was found guilty under Part 1 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (obtaining unlawful benefit) and awarded a fine of UAH 34,000. The court banned the doctor from working in military medical commissions for a year. The court also confiscated 5,800 hryvnias, 1,050 dollars, and 200 euros from the woman, which were found during the search, as she could not confirm their origin.
