The official announced name of the entire program and the order itself of January 27 is The Iron Dome for America. But now the program has been officially renamed The Golden Dome for America. A number of American publications drew attention to this, because first US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth called the program “Golden Dome or Iron Dome”, and then the fact of renaming was found in official documentation.
In particular, the request for information from the US government on the possibility of defense companies participating in the development of this system indicates that the Department of Defense has changed the name of the program to The Golden Dome for America. The reasons for this decision are not officially commented.
On the one hand, the name Iron Dome in general, “Iron Dome” immediately caused confusion in the entire program, because it does not relate to the Israeli missile defense complex at all. Even though the United States itself purchased it from Israel and will even produce missiles from it for its new MRIC air defense system for the Marine Corps.
And Trump’s “Iron Dome” is about Reagan’s new Star Wars, but now with Elon Musk. But the name “Iron Dome” is so hyped and well-known that it is associated only with Israeli development.
And the second reason was found by the American publication Defense News. The name Iron Dome is a trademark that is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It belongs to Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the developer and manufacturer of the Iron Dome itself.
That is, at the time of the development of the very idea of a new defense program, which was obviously done long before Trump’s inauguration, no one thought about it. Moreover, and this is even more important, when the draft order was already being developed, none of the real officials in the White House paid effective attention to it.
