SOF Destroys Rare MLRS “Uragan-1” Mistaken for Korean KN-09

In a recent military operation, Special Operations Forces (SOF) successfully neutralized the rare MLRS "Uragan-1," initially mistaken for the advanced Korean KN-09. This incident highlights the complexities of modern warfare and the critical importance of accurate intelligence.

The official channel of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine published a video of the destruction of the Russian 220-mm Uragan 1 MLRS and the Buk-M3 air defense system that covered it. It is the Uragan-1 that attracts attention, because it is a rather rare MLRS, during the war of which literally several units were destroyed.

It began to be supplied to the Russian army only in 2023. The only significant difference from the usual Uragan is the new chassis. Instead of the old ZIL-135LM, the 9P140 Uragan received the BAZ-69092 chassis. The chassis is equipped with an armored cockpit, which should increase the survivability of the crew and protect them from debris and tungsten balls from the warhead of the M30A1 guided missile.

The new Russian self-propelled guns 2S43 “Malva” and self-propelled guns 2S44 “Hyacinth-K” are also based on a similar chassis, the active production of which began only this year. The 220-mm fire system and guidance system in Uragan 1 remained old and did not change.

That is, to guide it, it is still necessary to deploy the buoy, which significantly increases the time of transfer to the combat position compared to the latest MLRS “Uragan-M1” or “Tornado-G”. There is also still no possibility of firing guided missiles.

It is worth noting that probably in part of the video with the destruction of the Uragan-1 there is a gluing of two unique videos with the destruction of the Uragan-1. This is indicated by the fact that in the footage from the FPV drone, it approaches the target along a fairly horizontal trajectory and should have hit directly under the launcher.

However, in the footage from the reconnaissance drone, it approaches the target along a vertical trajectory and hits the ground at a certain distance from the target. It also has a fairly powerful warhead, which is not typical for FPV drones. Given these factors, it is likely that in the footage from the reconnaissance drone, it was not an FPV drone that hit the MLRS, but an M30A1 guided missile with 182 thousand tungsten balls, which is used by the American M142 HIMARS MLRS.

It can also be mentioned that the second video of the destruction of the Uragan-1 was previously published, and then it was first identified on the network as the North Korean KN-09 MLRS, and then as the M1991 MLRS.
