Ukraine’s Defense Forces operate dozens of Gepard systems, which have proven to be a highly effective tool in the hands of Ukrainian warriors against long-range attack drones and even missiles launched by russian occupation forces.
“I was impressed. It is a very powerful, mobile, and effective weapon. This machine allows us to shoot down enemy aerial threats—unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and reconnaissance drones. It can detect and destroy all these targets,” said Andrii, a Gepard crew commander of the 1021st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, in an Army TV report.
When asked how much time is generally needed to engage a target, the serviceman responded: “It all depends on the target’s parameters—its speed, altitude, course, and flight trajectory. In some cases, the Gepard has shot down UAVs with just two or three rounds. During our first engagement, we downed a UAV at a range of 3 km, using 11 rounds.”
One of the vehicles shown in the video has markings indicating the downing of eight russian drones—achieved within just a month and a half.
Andrii emphasizes that the human factor—specifically the crew’s experience and training—plays a crucial role. When asked about the top three weapons against russian drones, he stated: “For me, the top three are the Gepard, the Gepard, and the Gepard. That’s it.”
“It works perfectly against Shaheds and even against missiles. We have shot down four missiles and 28 Shaheds,” said gunner-operator Serhii, sharing his experience with the system.
Earlier, War News Hub reported that an upgraded Ukrainian Gepard with an improved radar system would serve as a starting point for joint projects with KNDS Deutschland.
