Six Typhoon fighters from the Royal Air Force II Squadron from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland were deployed to the 22. Tactical Air Base in Malbork. The aircraft will be stationed in Poland until the end of July 2025 as part of Operation Chessman, carrying out the NATO Air Policing mission.

The presence of British fighter jets in Poland is part of NATO’s commitment to support the security of the Alliance’s eastern flank.

The mission underscores the UK’s unwavering commitment to working with Poland to enhance Europe’s security. Deployment of 140. Expeditionary Air Wing is part of the ongoing NATO Air Policing program.

Group Captain Chris Brown, UK Defence Attaché in Poland, underlines the strategic importance of this mission:

“The presence of Typhoon fighters in Malbork is a clear signal of British commitment to the security of the region. The mission is proof of the deep partnership between Poland and the United Kingdom.

Joint action within NATO structures is the foundation of our collective security, especially in the current geopolitical situation in Europe.”

Wing Commander Christopher Jacob, commander of the 140. Expeditionary Air Wing, adds:

“We are here to defend and deter, ready to protect against any threat, while assuring our allies of the UK’s commitment to NATO and the security of the region. We are committed to developing partnerships, enhancing interoperability, building trust, and strengthening cooperation and unity among our NATO partners.”

As part of Operation Chessman, Swedish Gripen fighters were also deployed in Malbork.
