Kurdistan targeted by Iranian ballistic missiles
On the night of Tuesday, January 16, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck targets in Erbil, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, with long-range ballistic missiles, Reuters reports.
“Ballistic missiles were used to destroy spy centers and gatherings of anti-Iranian terrorist groups in the region late at night,” the IRGC said in a statement.
As the agency notes with reference to sources in security agencies, the explosions were heard in an area approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Erbil in the Kurdish autonomous region of Iraq. They took place near the US consulate, as well as civilian residential buildings.
At least two people died. Five more wounded civilians were taken to a local hospital after the explosions.
Air traffic at Erbil airport was stopped.
It will be recalled that on December 8, 2023, the US embassy in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, was attacked with missiles. There were no victims. It was reported that there were indications that the strike was carried out by militants linked to Iran.
As you know, Iran is an ally of fascist Russia and helps it with weapons in the war against Ukraine. Iran and the Russian Federation also support Hamas, which attacked Israel.
