As part of its military assistance to Ukraine, Spain has taken on the training of Ukrainian soldiers. Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion, Spanish military personnel have trained approximately 7,000 servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
For the first time, fragments of this training process have been published on video by the Spanish media outlet Infodefensa. The footage suggests that Spain itself is drawing lessons from the russia-Ukraine war and integrating them into its training programs.
Adapting to Modern Warfare
This adaptation is evident in the conditions and methods used by Spanish instructors to train Ukrainian soldiers. The video showcases a variety of exercises, including:
- Clearing enemy trenches,
- Evacuating wounded personnel,
- Firearms training,
- Urban combat operations.
Notably, Spanish training grounds recreate enemy trenches with remarkable accuracy, even incorporating camouflage nets to simulate defenses against drone-dropped explosives. The training also heavily integrates drones into battlefield scenarios, particularly for deploying munitions via strike drones.
Additionally, as part of the training course, Spanish instructors provide Ukrainian soldiers with lectures on international humanitarian law, covering the rules of engagement during combat operations.

Spain’s Growing Role in Military Training
Until now, Spain has accumulated significant experience in training foreign military personnel, but training Ukrainian soldiers has presented unique challenges.
It is worth recalling reports from February 2025, when the Spanish Army released a video demonstrating how, based on lessons learned from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, its own troops would conduct trench assaults. These exercises took place in Slovakia as part of the deployment of Spanish forces in the country.
Previously, we also reported on Australia’s armed forces, which have declared their readiness to send soldiers to Ukraine.
